FERPA/HIPPA quiz
After taking the FERPA/ HIPPA quiz I learned that no matter what the custody situation of a child is both parents have rights to seeing their school records. There are many situations in today’s society where only one parent has full custody of the child. Now that I know this law I would want to be aware of which parent has custody of the child. If the other parent is seeking information on the child I would inform the parent with the custody of the situation.

Data Report
Since I am not a teacher yet I looked at the data reports for my Elementary school I attended. I attended Hornung Elementary in Brighton Michigan. I looked at the male verse female reading level, on the Meap test for the year of 2013-2014. The gap is found in the number of girls that are in the top 30 reading percentile compared to boys. The difference is not dramatic but it makes me wonder why girls are generally at a higher reading level than boys in 3rd grade.

Surveys in my classroom
1. How often do you read?
a. 2-3 days a week
b. 4-5 days a week
c. 6-7 days a week
d. none
2. Do your parents read to you?
a. Yes
b. No
3. Do you enjoy reading?
a. Yes
b. No
These are a few questions I would have my students answer regarding reading. I would have them answer it in a quiz form so I could see the average answer as well as the individual students answer. This would help me distinguish what is different between the girls and boys in relation to reading. Then I would use my data collected to help change the boys views on reading or send home ways parents can improve their child’s reading scores.
